The Stress Cycle You Didn't Know You Were In Plus a 20-Second Fix
Sep 14, 2026Hey, let's talk about a stress cycle most women don't even realize they're stuck in.
Your body can't tell the difference
Your nervous system reacts to a work deadline the same way it reacts to an actual threat. Cortisol and adrenaline spike identically for a perceived danger and a real one. The trouble is, most of what stresses us day to day isn't a lion in the woods. It's a deadline, a hard conversation, a full inbox. And because your body can't tell the difference, chronic "small" stress keeps cortisol elevated far longer than it was ever meant to be.
The perceived threats nobody names out loud
For most of my ladies, the list looks familiar: deadlines at work, aging parents who need more from you every year, teenagers navigating their own storms, finances that never quite settle. None of these are life-threatening on their own. But stacked together, day after day, your body reads them as one long emergency.
A story that taught me this the hard way
A friend of mine was going through a hard season a few years back. Evening after evening, she'd call right after I got my kids down for the night and unload everything she was carrying. After every call, sleep would come slow, replaying the conversation and running through how to help her.
Weeks of that and something in me started to shift. Short with my kids over nothing. Uptight with my husband. Annoyed at things that never used to bother me. Eventually the pattern got impossible to miss. She'd call, hand over her stress, and it landed in my nervous system right before bed with no way to release it.
So something had to change. Evening calls stopped. Our talks moved to daytime on the weekends, when there was time to actually use tools to unwind long before it was time to sleep. The favorite tool after one of those conversations? Watching something ridiculous with the kids until everyone was laughing too hard to breathe.
Turns out that was oxytocin doing exactly what it's designed to do.
The hormone that shuts it off
Here's the part I want you to walk away with. There's a hormone that tells your body the crisis is over ~ oxytocin. You don't get it from a supplement bottle. You raise it through connection: a hug that lasts a full 20 seconds, real laughter, prayer, a conversation where your phone stays out of reach.
Try this today. One 20-second hug. One real conversation, no screen in your hand, or time with your pet. Small, but it matters more than it sounds like it should.
Rest as sacred, not lazy
Rest was built into the design, not added on as an afterthought for when you've earned it. Choosing connection and stillness in the middle of a full life isn't indulgent. It's how your body remembers it's safe.
You are not broken. You are becoming.
Sexy. Unstoppable. Resilient. Energetic. That's what we're building toward, one habit at a time.
I'm not a doctor, and nothing here is a guarantee. This is what I've learned through my own training and my own life, offered to walk alongside you.
