You're Not Lazy, You're Depleted
Aug 31, 2026Hey Ladies,
Let's talk about the tired that sleep doesn't fix
You get eight hours. Maybe even nine. And you still wake up feeling like you never laid down.
If that's you, you're not lazy, and you're not imagining it. Something else is going on, and it's worth understanding instead of just pushing through it. Your body was never meant to run on empty forever, and noticing that isn't weakness ~ it's wisdom.
The night a "productivity hack" turned into years of missing sleep
Several years ago, life looked like this: busy mom, busy wife, a to-do list that never seemed to end. 9:30 would roll around, and my husband would ask, "Are you coming to bed?" I still had a list of things to finish.
The solution seemed brilliant at the time: drink 24 ounces of water right before bed. A few hours later, a trip to the bathroom would wake me up anyway ~ so why not stay up and check a few more things off the list? The house was quiet. No distractions. It felt incredibly productive.
Missing four or more hours of sleep a night didn't seem like a big deal. Catching up on the weekends would fix it. Or so the thinking went.
Here's the truth: it took years to realize how much I was actually losing in that trade. Type A and organized as ever, I lost items, forgot plans, and to this day, kids and my siblings tell stories from that season that don't ring a single bell.
Now sleep gets protected like life depends on it. Because it does. There's a kind of grace in learning that lesson before losing anything more.
What would your life look like with no memories of it?
Weekends don't refund what weeknights take
This is exactly why "I'll catch up on the weekend" doesn't work the way it feels like it should. Sleep isn't a bank account. It's not just how much you sleep ~ it's the rhythm underneath it.
Your body runs on a circadian rhythm ~ an internal clock set largely by light. Under normal conditions, cortisol rises in the morning to wake you up and get you moving, and melatonin rises at night to wind you down. It's a built-in design, and it works well when you respect it.
The problem is that modern life doesn't respect it. Dim, rushed mornings paired with bright screens late at night ~ or a "productive" 1 a.m. ~ send your body mixed signals about what time it actually is. Sleeping in on Saturday doesn't undo a week of that confusion. Over time, it shows up as exhaustion, brain fog, and memory gaps that sleep alone can't touch, no matter how many hours you try to make up for it later.
You can drink water all day and still be dehydrated
Here's another piece nobody talks about enough: cellular hydration. Plain water can pass right through your system if your cells don't have what they need to actually absorb it ~ electrolytes and minerals. That's why "I drink water all day" and "I'm still tired" can both be true.
Where to start
You don't need to overhaul everything at once. Start here:
- Protect the hours you have. If a late-night "hack" or habit is quietly stealing hours from your sleep, notice it before it becomes years, as it did for me.
- Morning light. Get outside within 30 minutes of waking, even on a cloudy day. It's a simple, free way to reset your internal clock.
- Morning hydration. Add a pinch of sea salt or an electrolyte packet to your first glass of water. It helps your cells actually use what you're drinking.
Small changes, done consistently, tend to move the needle more than big overhauls that don't last, and more than any weekend "catch-up" ever could.
You are not broken. You are becoming.
This kind of tired isn't a character flaw, and it isn't something to just white-knuckle through. It's information. Your body is telling you something, and it's worth listening ~ before it costs you years of memories the way it has for me. Rest isn't something to earn. It's part of how we were made to function, a gift meant to be received rather than justified.
